Nazca Lines
Originally thought to be the remains of irrigation lines beyond the verdant Nazca valley, it wasn't until they were seen from the air that the lines were recognizable as giant animal and geometric figures. The lines are thought to have been etched on the Pampa Colorada sands by three different groups: the Paracas people 900-200 BC, the Nascas 200 BC-AD 700, and the settlers from Ayacucho 630 AD.
The creation of the Nazca Lines remains a mystery. Some historians agree that the images were spiritually motivated and constructed as an offering to the gods in the sky.
Several local airstrips permit aerial viewing of the Lines on short, comfortable flights.
