The Road of Apu Ausangate Trek 6D/5N
Duration:
6 days / 5 nights
Distance:
70 km
Difficulty:
Medium
An ‘Apu’ is a mountain spirit in Incan mythology; a belief that has persisted to the present day in Peruvian folklore and Andean communities. The Apu Ausangate is the highest peak in the Cusco region (20,945 ft), and revered by the indigenous locals as a holy mountain.
The Ausangate trek aims to show you why the mountain is held in such high regard by the locals: Expect a challenging trek to snow-capped mountain peaks winding through multi-colored lagoons with glimpses of wildlife native to the Andes – culminating with a soak in a hot spring!
This is one of the prettiest treks in region – and the area is remote and not as frequented as other sites since it isn’t near Machu Picchu. If you are interested in the Peruvian outdoors instead of Inca ruins, this is the trek for you!

The Road of Apu Ausangate Trek: Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Tinki – Upis (L, D)
We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and take you to the start of the trail head in Tinki where we will meet your horseman and horses. On the way we will wander through local communities and see villagers working in remote mountain villages. Traditional Andean animals like llamas and alpacas will be a common sight as well as many wild birds. After a good day’s hike, we will reach our first campsite at Upis, next to the river, with scenic views of the Ausangate Mountains. We also have a chance to enjoy thermal baths if you so wish. (optional – entrance fee not included).
Day 2: Upis – Ausangate Laguna (B, L, D)
We will rise early in the morning and ascend the slopes to cross over the Arapa Pass (14,760 ft). We will pass many beautiful lakes with a variety of colored hues such as the red lake Uchuy Pucacocha, where the local Andean healers perform special rituals requesting to receive the energy to cure the community from the mountain god and mother earth. We will stop for lunch at Pucamocco, a point known for its spectacular view of many huge snow-capped mountain peaks. After this we will continue our descent to our camp site in the lower skirts of the Ausangate mountain.
Day 3: Ausangate Laguna – Jampa (B, L, D)
On day three we make for the Palomani pass (17,056 ft), the highest point of the Trek. From the pass, we will follow the path into the valley of Pampa Jatunpata and traverse uphill into the Chilca valley, which is where we will overnight and take in the views of the glacier covered mountains.
Day 4: Jampa – Comerococha (B, L, D)
After breakfast we will start of the easier part of the trek – we will cross the Jampa Pass (16,404 ft), our last mountain pass. We will then make our way down to the Comerococha passing several different colored lakes on the way to our campsite.
Day 5: Comerococha – Pacchanta (B, L, D)
The trail descends towards the small village of Pacchanta where you’ll have the opportunity to take it easy and rest and relax in the thermal springs for a couple of hours if you like! (optional – entrance fee not included) We’ll set up camp near Pacchanta and you’ll have the afternoon free to explore this Andean village.
Day 6: Pacchanta – Tinki – Cusco (B, L)
A short hike this morning will bring us to the main road near Tinki where you will have lunch, before our transportation picks us up and drives us back to Cusco. Upon arrival, your guide will drop you off back at your hotel.
