Huchuy Qosqo Trek to Machu Picchu

Duration:
3 days / 2 nights

Distance:
11 km

Difficulty:
Medium

The Huchuy Qosco trek is an Inca trail alternative that offers scenic mountain views on age-old routes but skips the challenging hike up the Dead Woman’s pass on the Classic Inca trail. Explore the Incan ruins of a royal estate at Huchuy Qosqo, while overlooking the Sacred Valley on a less utilized route – before making your way to the citadel of Machu Picchu.

The Huchuy Qosco trek is designed for those who want to experience the Peruvian outdoors, but are looking for an easier trekking route or for those who don’t wish to camp.

Day 1: Cusco – Huchuy Qosqo (L, D)

We will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco and drive you to Puray Lake where our trek to Huchuy Qosqo begins. We continue our trek uphill until we reach the Chinchero summit where you will have a spectacular view of the Sacred Valley and the Vilcabamba mountain range. We’ll continue on to the Huchuy Qosqo ruins (a palace during the Inca times) where your guide will give you a tour of the site. After exploring, we will enjoy a nice meal and overnight in a local lodge.

Day 2: Huchuy Qosco – Lamay – Aguas Calientes (B, L)

After an early breakfast in the lodge, we will hike down the Sacred Valley to the village of Lamay where we will take a shuttle to the ancient Incan city of Ollantaytambo where will stop for lunch. After lunch we will board a train to Aguas Calientes, the closest access point to Machu Picchu. The train ride is scenic – feel free to relax and enjoy the spectacular views. Upon arrival we will check you into your hotel, and you can explore the city and grab dinner at your leisure.

Day 3: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco (B)

If you want to see the sunrise from the sun gate (weather and your entrance ticket time permitting), we’ll get up early and make our way to the overlook so you see the citadel of Machu Picchu materialize on the horizon! Once at Machu Picchu, your guide will give you a tour of the complex. After the tour, if you have booked permits to climb Huayna Picchu peak or the Machu Picchu mountain (both optional) we will make our way to the respective gates. No matter what you choose to do, you’ll still have additional time to explore Machu Picchu. Your guide will let you know when you need to be back so you can catch your transfers to Ollantaytambo and Cusco.
