Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu
Duration:
5 days / 4 nights
Distance:
55 km
Difficulty:
Hard
Looking for an alternative to the Inca Trail? Do not miss this adventure!!! Hiking from Salkantay to Santa Teresa exhibits the extensively distinct ecosystems of the Andes. Our 5-day trek takes us along one of the most diverse and pristine Andean trails in the Cusco region. We will first head to the highlands to cross passes that flank the Salkantay and Humantay Mountains. The most stunning segment of the trail is on the Mountain’s southwest side between these Apus when we come within reach of its glacier and ice blocks. The following portion of the trek has us descending through the warm, subtropical valleys, where we pass waterfalls, and marvel at the vibrant flora and fauna as we approach Machu Picchu.
The mountains of the Cordillera Vilcabamba rise to form a ragged chain between the region´s two great rivers, the Urubamba and the Apurimac. Along the Cordillera’s northern side, the massive snow peaks collide with the tropical rain forest to create a brilliant contrast between lofty desolation and lush vegetation. Located northwest of Cusco, Mount Apu Salkantay is one of the cordillera’s tallest peaks in the Cusco region. At its eastern end, the chain rises to 6255m/20,521ft. The peak´s name, Salkantay, means ´Wild´ Mountain in the Qechua language. It is believed to bear this name in reference to the swirling clouds that rise up from the jungle lowlands and engulf it.
PLEASE NOTE: All people who trek this route must be in reasonably excellent physical condition.
